Press Release

Tuesday, June 24, 2014 - 4:28pm - Her Majesty’s Passport Office (HMPO) is dealing with the highest demand for passports in recent years, which has caused longer-than-expected turnaround times. As a result, British passport holders in the BVI whose passports have recently expired or will soon expire, can apply for their passports to be extended for twelve months.  This service is not available to first-time applicants.

The service starts with immediate effect and is subject to strict eligibility criteria, which can be found at the Gov.uk website:https://www.gov.uk/get-an-emergency-passport-extension-or-child-travel-document.  Child passports can also be extended.  British passport holders will not be charged any extra fees for this service.

The service is strictly by appointment.  Please email Claire.hunter@fco.gov.uk at the Governor’s Office to request an appointment and confirm that you meet the full criteria.  Whilst the Governor’s Office will endeavour to provide a speedy service, applicants may need to wait a day or two for the necessary checks to be carried out.

Applicants are advised to check the websites of the border authorities of countries to which they are travelling to confirm whether restrictions will apply.  The authorities in the UK and Canada will accept UK passports with a valid extension endorsement.  The US government has said it will accept extended passports only if they are accompanied by a valid green card or US Visa.  The US Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) is therefore not available to British passport holders with the 12 month extension stamp in their passports.    A list of countries and Territories that currently accept the extended passports can be found: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/list-of-countries-that-will-accept-passports-extended-by-12-months.

The Governor’s Office is not able to answer any other general passport questions or give information on passport applications in progress.  These enquiries should be directed to HMPO’s Passport Adviceline https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports, https://www.gov.uk/passport-advice-line.    Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) continue to be processed by the British High Commission in Barbados.

    Notes for Editors:
    1. British passport holders should note that British passports cannot be renewed or replaced in the BVI.  From 12 August 2013, the application process was centralised and British nationals in the BVI submit their passport application to Her Majesty’s Passport Office in the UK. Payment is by credit or debit card (Visa or Mastercard) only.  Applicants should not make any firm travel plans until they have received their passports.  Further information for applying from overseas, including forms and fees, can be found at https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports, https://www.gov.uk/passport-advice-line.
    2. British passport holders should note that they are able to renew their passports at a Passport Office in the UK providing the holder is in the UK at the time. Details of this service can be found at https://www.gov.uk/apply-renew-passport.
    3. British Overseas Territories Citizen (BOTC) passports continue to be processed by the Civil Registry and Passport Office as before. If persons were naturalised or registered as a British Overseas Territories Citizen after 20 May 2002, they will only be eligible for Passport facilities as a British Citizen once they have been registered as such a Citizen by the Home Office in the United Kingdom.
