OAS Receives Contribution from United States to Support the Peace Process in Colombia

By: OAS, Press Release

June 25th, 2014  --  The Organization of American States today received a contribution of US$420,000 from the Government of the United States of America, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), for the Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia (MAPP/OAS).

The contribution was received pursuant to an agreement signed between the General Secretariat and USAID to help finance the MAPP/OAS’ activities in Colombia related to the transitional justice system, demobilization, disarmament and reintegration of former combatants and land restitution to victims of the Colombian conflict that have been displaced by violence.

The MAPP/OAS monitors and verifies the implementation of Colombian peace process and has been active in the country since 2004 when the government first decided to embark on a peace process with the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC). For more than ten years USAID and MAPP/OAS have worked closely together to foster peace, democracy and security in Colombia. During this period, USAID has contributed over US$9 million to the MAPP/OAS.

Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza thanked the Permanent Representative of the United States to the OAS, Carmen Lomellin; and the Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for USAID’s Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean, Elizabeth Hogan, “for the clear commitment the United States has shown for the MAPP during all these years.”

In welcoming the US contribution, Insulza also emphasized the importance of the MAPP/OAS, indicating that “over the years, the MAPP has effectively supported the changing needs of Colombia’s peace process. We stand ready to provide the government with our assistance, knowledge and expertise to help implement the agreements we hope the government will soon reach with the FARC and the ELN.”
