The Bregado Flax Educational Centre Primary Division is the 2009 Spelling Bee Champion. The trio of students, Kosay Jabre, Team A, DeAndre George, Team B and Joanna Gibson, the alternate team member were declared winners after nine rounds of competition.

Leading the team, Kosay Jabre threw his hands in the air after the Althea Scatliffe Primary School was declared the second-placed team, with the Willard Wheatley Primary School finishing in third.

In her concluding remarks, Ms. Gloria Rogers, a teacher at the Bregado Flax Educational Centre-primary division, said a moment like this truly exemplifies the saying of the Education Minister that the school system is going from good to great.

Team members from the Willard Wheatley Primary School were gracious in accepting their third place awards which included a dictionary and a trophy. Team leader Roliya Jackson said she was happy to have made it to the finals.

The all male team of the Althea Scatliffe School expressed similar sentiments.  Team member N’Khoy Stoutt reflected on his training leading up to the competition saying that while he was encouraged to win he was happy to be in second place.

The winning team from the Bregado Flax Educational Centre was a mixture of excitement and surprise. The emotions were clear in their interview with the Department of Information and Public Relations.
“I’m Kosay Jabre, I’m from Bregado Flax Primary School and we finished in first place,” he exclaimed.

Sharing his excitement, his team mate said, “I’m DeAndre George from Bregado Flax Educational Centre” adding “I feel good about winning since it is the first time Bregado Flax ever won.”

Not to be left out of the celebration, the third team member joined the others saying, “my name is Joanna Gibson from the Bregado Flax Educational Centre Primary Division and I do not really have any thoughts right now, I am really glad my school won.”

The primary and secondary competitions come to a close one week before the start of Education Week which will be observed in the Territory from March 8 to 14.
