Team UNITY Warns: Government Trying To Steal Elections

Press Release TUCOM

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, June 27th   2014 (TUCOM):-  Faced with scientific polls that the government will lose the next general elections, it is clear that the illegitimate Denzil Douglas regime wants to deny the people their right to free and fair elections. A clarion call was made by Team Unity’s Leader, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris for residents and citizens to be vigilant and to resist efforts of the Douglas led Party to corrupt and compromise institutions that ought to support democracy in the country.

In a passionate speech in Dieppe Bay, Dr Harris called on Peter Jenkins, Chairman of the state owned ZBC Limited/ZIZ Radio and TV to halt to partisan manipulation of the state radio and TV by the Labour Party. He highlighted examples of bias reporting and called on Peter Jenkins to check the situation.

Peter Jenkins is a well-known Party Operative of the Douglas led Labour Party. In the Constituency Boundaries Case, litigants charged Peter Jenkins with bias. It is generally felt that Mr Jenkins has more than a passing interest in preserving the illegitimate regime. Peter Jenkins is being paid around $10000 monthly for his involvement with the infrastructural works on the Frigate Bay Road. It is not clear that there was public tender for this work. Peter Jenkins also received contract in relation to the Social Security Building being constructed in Nevis. Again the public is unaware of the tendering processes which led to the choice of Jenkins by the government selected board.

Jenkins Funeral Home is the principal beneficiary of government failure to restore the morgue at the Joseph N France Hospital to its former level of service and including the capacity for preservation of the dead bodies prior to burial. In the context of the foregoing conflictual situations of private gains versus public interests, some are not surprised that under Jenkins’ watch as Chairman, the state run ZIZ Radio and TV/ZBC is being operated as the spokesman for the Labour Party. Its news items are deliberately skewed to portray the Opposition in a negative light and the government in a positive manner. Opposition candidates are being denied access to state owned radio and TV.

These actions by ZIZ/ZBC run contrary to the law as outlined in the Mark Brantley vs Hensley Daniel et al Election case. Judges rulethat state media must provide equitable access to all political parties, and the denial of access to the Opposition was wrong in law and a violation of the democratic system.

Team Unity has also called on Hesketh Benjamin, Chairman of the Electoral Commission to ensure an end is put to voter irregularities including list padding, the registering of persons in constituencies where they do not reside and regularities in the posting of the transfer lists. The situation has worsened with the appointment of Wingrove George as Supervisor of Elections.
