Press Release

CHARLESTOWN,Nevis,June 24, 2014  --  Forty grade six Principles of Tourism students from Nevis recently enjoyed the fun packed educational special outing which involved having lunch at  Spice Mill restaurant.

The students drawn from Ivor Walters, St. Thomas’s, Maude Crosse and VOJ primary schools travelled free on the Sea Bridge, a treat the ship management has given tourism students for the past five years.

According to Deborah Llellouch who teaches Principles of Tourism in the four schools, the students interacted beautifully with Sea Bridge captain staff and passengers and on arrival at the Spice Mill restaurant, they enjoyed a delicious lunch, thanks to owner Roger Brisbane who ensured that  students enjoy the luncheon by closing it to the public on the day the students visited to ensure that students are given special attention by staff.

“The outing is made possible due to a collaborative effort of the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Tourism, the private sector and the Hotel and Tourism Association(HTA). The outing gives them an idea of transportation and hospitality .  Principles of Tourism is integrated in the Social Studies curriculum ” Ms Llellouch said.

LLellouch who has been teaching the tourism course to grade six students for the past ten years further explained that the course was extremely useful.  “Tourism is the engine that drives our economy.  We teach accessibility, accommodations, amenities among other topics,” she said.

To make the course practical, Ms Llellouch organizes various trips and excursions to enable students have a tourist experience. The course is designed by Carribbean Tourism Organisation(CTO).  Vanessa Webbe a tourism officer with the Ministry of Tourism teaches the course in Elizabeth Pemberton School, Charlestown Primary School, St. James’s School and Gingerland primary school.
