Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 02, 2014 (SKNIS)  --  St. Kitts and Nevis will host persons from regulatory agencies across the region who will participate in four days of training on effective price regulation for broadband services (high speed internet).

The workshop organized by the local Department of Information Technology in collaboration with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) will be held from July 07 to 10 at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.

Government’s ICT Policy Advisor, Innovation and Industry Unit,  Pierre Bowrin disclosed that in the past, regulators determined broadband pricing models that were influenced by the number of technology tools with internet access.

“As the technology landscape is changing it is quite important for them (regulators) to review those models and to be introduced to any new ones,” Bowrin stated.

As such, the sessions will explore several topics covering price regulations and cost models for next generation networks such as 4G mobile. Participants are expected to exchange experiences and engage in role play of an interconnection negotiation. Mr. Bowrin said consumers are expected to benefit from such a review.

“The job of the regulator is to make sure that the prices and other things fit well for both the provider of the service and the consumer as well,” he stated. “The understanding is that the regulator recognizing those two forces will put regulations in place to ensure that the provider operates at an acceptable level of profit and the consumer also can consume those services at prices that are acceptable.”
