Unity Re-Emphasises That Better Must Come For Nevis

Press Release TUCOM

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, July 3rd    2014 (TUCOM):-The commitment of the ruling Concerned Citizen Movement (CCM) to win and bring the three (3) electoral seats in Nevis to the Unity Movement in the upcoming Federal Elections will bring dividends to the people of Nevis. At the historic opening of Team Unity’s Campaign Headquarters on 25th June, Dr. the Hon Timothy Harris, Leader of Team Unity, and the member of Parliament with the support of the majority of MPs for the Office of the Prime Minister, emphasized the need for a special dispensation for Nevisians and the island of Nevis. Dr. Harris told hundreds of supporters physically present on Fort Street and thousands more listening by internet that “Team Unity was born out of the desire of the people to change the way politics is practiced in St. Kitts and Nevis. Team Unity was born out of the urgent desire of the people of this country for better relations amongst and between our people. Team Unity was born for better and more harmonious relations between the people of St. Kitts and the people of Nevis. Team Unity was born for a better and more equitable working arrangement between the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) in Charlestown and the Federal Government in Basseterre. A relationship which, in the future, will be based on respect, on trust and recognition of what Premier Amory would call the obligations of higher public office. Team Unity is for a better constitution and an appreciation of our shared citizenship.”

In the last Nevis Island Assembly elections the people of Nevis rightly rejected Douglas ally in government – the NRP, notwithstanding the millions spent in election propaganda and airlifting Nevisians home. The special distributions from the SIDF that ended up in the pockets of NRP hacks did not save the NRP which had become tainted by its association with the Douglas regime. Douglas himself was very present in Nevis - A sight which repulsed many Nevisians.

Faced with that rejection Douglas has been very antagonistic towards Premier Vance Amory and Hon Mark Brantley. In efforts to sabotage the duly and overwhelmingly elected Vance Amory government, the Douglas cabal has:

    1. Cut SIDF monthly support to the Nevis Island Administration

    2. Refused to share with the NIA, millions of dollars in funding from the Taiwanese government and budgetary support from the European Union.

    3. Manipulated the government appointed Board of National Bank to deny 1800 government workers in Nevis opportunities to cash their cheques. The Board of National Bank comprised die hard supporters of the Douglas Party like Lincoln Maynard -Party Organizer, failed Candidate- Halva Hendrickson, and Party CEO - Sharylle Hendrickson etc.

    4. Forced the NIA to transfer lands in the infamous land for debt swap.

    5. Called on nurses in Nevis to defy proper instructions from Nevis Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Hon. Mark Brantley.

    6. Refused to issue a federal guarantee precipitating the default of the bonds of NIA, such bonds previously received federal guarantee.

    7. Refused to fund a thorough investigation into the cause of fire which destroyed the Inland Revenue Department, Customs Department and Philatelic Bureau. This was an obligation of the Federal government.

    8. Organized a jouvert jam in St. Kitts to compete with Culturama activities in Nevis.

    9. Manipulated ZIZ Radio/TV to spin anti CCM propaganda. The politics of vendetta practiced by Douglas has undermined public confidence in him. Nevisians yearn for a genuinely harmonious relationship with the Federal entity. Team Unity offers the people of Nevis better.
Equitable sharing of the SIDF proceeds; international assistance will take place between the Federal entity and the Nevis Island Administration. The new dispensation of trust, accountability and transparency will provide the impetus for a better way of doing things
