SKN lead Day One of OECS Championships

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOUR gold medals have team St. Kitts and Nevis at the top of the medal standing at the end of Day One of the 2014 OECS Championships being held at the Silver Jubilee Stadium in Bird Rock.

     

    Team St. Kitts and Nevis’ charge was led yesterday (July 5) by Brijesh Lawrence who dashed to victory in the 200 metres in a time of 20.59 seconds. 

    He was also instrumental in the Federation winning the 4x100m Relay in a time of 39.38 seconds ahead of Antigua and Barbuda 39.86 and St. Vincent and the Grenadines 41.64 seconds.

    The Federation’s females were also successful in the 4x100m Relay, copping the gold in a time of 45.99 seconds.

    Also winning gold for St. Kitts and Nevis was Rosalie Pringle who triumphed in the female 800 metres event.

    St. Lucia currently occupies second place with two gold medals and was led by Jeannelle Scheper and Lavern Spencer, who outclassed their competitors in the Women’s High Jump winning the gold and silver respectively. The other gold came from Rochelle Etienne who won the Women’s Javelin with a 36.56m throw.

    In the Men’s Shot Put Dillon Simon of Dominica wowed the audience with a throw of 18.18m to capture gold while Kinike Alexander of St. Vincent and the Grenadines impressed in the Women’s 200m in a time of 22.97 seconds.

    In the Men’s 800m Grenada’s Kemon Herry thwarted late challenges from local boys O’bien Huggins and Kajon Parris to take gold.

    The meet is expected to continue today (Jul. 6) with 100m Preliminaries and Finals, 400m Finals, High Jump, Shot Put and Long Jump.

    Also present at the Silver Jubilee Stadium was the Jumbotron promised by Minister of Sports Hon. Glen Phillip.

    The last OECS Championship was held in 1991 in St. Lucia.
