Dr Timothy Harris Praises Sir Robert Bradshaw and Sir Kennedy Simmonds' Contribution To UNITY

Rt Hon Dr Sir Kennedy Simmonds
By: Team UNITY, Press Release (TUCOM)

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, July 7th   2014 (TUCOM)  -  Team Unity’s Leader Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, and popular Member of Parliament for St Christopher 7 has praised former heads of government, The Right Honourable Robert L Bradshaw NH and Dr the Right Honourable Sir Kennedy Simmonds for their visions.

Dr Harris told a multitude of people gathered on Fort Street for the historic opening of Unity’s Headquarters that the vision of Unity predates the launch of Team Unity on 26 September 2013. He credited our First National Hero, Sir Robert Bradshaw and our First Prime Minister, Dr the Right Honourable Sir Kennedy Simmonds for taking huge steps to foster unity.

Dr Harris hailed Dr Simmond’s effort to maintain the integrity of the state of St Kitts and Nevis and for making the most substantive offer for participation by Nevisians in the Federal Government.  Dr Simeon Daniel, Ivor Stevens and Uriel Swanston were invited by Dr Simmonds to form a coalition government with PAM in 1980. Latterly NRP Leader Joseph Parry served as Minister of Tourism in Dr Simmonds’ administration. These historic decisions and outreach by Dr Simmonds helped to keep at bay the fragmentation of the Federation and the invocation of section 113 (the secession clause).

Dr Harris lauded Dr Simmonds for wanting to build a bridge joining the South East Penisular in St. Kitts to New Castle in Nevis.  “After Bradshaw came our first Prime Minister Dr the Rt. Hon Sir Kennedy Simmonds, who pursued unity amongst our people and reached out to address a predominantly divisive issue of the day, that of secession for Nevis. Sir Kennedy strengthened the cooperation and collaboration between two islands with strategic initiatives designed to bring about more harmony.

It was Dr Simmonds’ vision of unity which got expression in his efforts to involve Nevis in a substantive way in the federal government.  His concept of physical bridge linking our two islands at the South East Peninsular in St. Kitts and New Castle in Nevis, had at its core a philosophy and undertaking of the imperative urgency of unity. Let us give Sir Kennedy a round of applause.”

Meantime Dr Harris hailed Bradshaw’s contribution to Unity in the following terms, “This historic journey began way back with our revered First National Hero, The Rt. Excellent Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw who stood for and promoted the idea of unity as a basis for sustained social, cultural, political and economic development in our small islands. We were reminded earlier this month of that unrelenting commitment to unity of our people and unity of purpose by Sir Robert.  This look into our history was presented by Sir Probyn Inniss who served as Bradhsaw’s vision of unity for the common good, because Bradshaw knew that as people we are better together.”

The positive messages by Team Unity’s Leader and his two Deputies have been well received by the Unity Family. Team Unity intends to move the country to reconciliation and development by harnessing all the talents, experiences and creativity of the citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis. Political pundits have been lauding the historic amalgam of three political parties as a step in the right direction and a sign of maturity among the political leadership in St Kitts and Nevis.

Polls conducted by Don Anderson have consistently showed that a majority of Kittitians and Nevisians support Team Unity and Dr Timothy Harris for Prime Minister. Team Unity has been offering solutions to the many problems faced by the people of St Kitts and Nevis.

Team Unity has been outlining its plans for rebuilding the socio-economic fabric of St. Kitts and Nevis. Two broad themes have emerged relating to good governance and democracy and inclusive growth and development.
