Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 01, 2014 (SKNIS) -- “A Nation on the Move, Celebrating Our Progress” is the theme of St. Kitts and Nevis’ 31st Anniversary of Independence.
According to Chairperson of the Independence Celebrations Committee, Her Excellency Ambassador Astona Browne, preparations for this year’s observance of Independence are “ongoing and going well.”
The committee is comprised of officials from various Government ministries and departments as well as representatives of civil groups and organizations.
This year’s celebrations will commence on September 01 with live radio and television messages from the Right Honourable Prime Minister and the Cabinet of Ministers. Traditional events include the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving Service on September 14, National Heroes Day Observance on September 16, and the Independence Ceremonial Parade on September 19.
New additions to the calendar of activities include a National Tree Planting Day and a Wellness Lecture on September 13, a Street Market on September 26 and others.
Ambassador Browne encouraged all citizens of the twin-island Federation to embrace the spirit of Independence and to reflect on and celebrate the continued growth of the Nation. St. Kitts and Nevis gained independence from Great Britain on September 19, 1983.
