Where are they now? – Lord Kent Come Back full of “Energy”

Lord Kent
By: Lord Kent & Staff Reporter

It was back in 1983 when he exploded on the local calypso scene with his big hit song "Lord Kent Come Back", which had Kittitians and Nevisians doing the "Funky Chicken" dance with him to that song.

Anthony Gonsalves 'Lord Kent' was born in Happy Hill, New Town. He is the fourth child of twelve children eight (8) boys and four (4) girls born to Joseph Lake and Agatha Gonsalves of Newtown.

His motivation to becoming a calypsonian started at a very young age while hanging around local calypso legend, King Ellie Matt who lived very close to him in New Town and the many talented musicians who practiced in the famous yard known in St. Kitts calypso circles as “Under the bread fruit tree”.

“I can remember extempoing songs for my friends while we sat on the corner of the many New Town rum shops as they cheer and gave me 5 cents with the encouragement that I should become a calypsonian”. “At that time I was a big calypso fan but never had the nerve to get involved in the art form since cricket and football was my true passion” said Lord Kent.

His musical career as a calypsonian began in St. Lucia at the age of 23 as a lead vocalist with one of the Islands most popular groups “Rebirth 7” back in 1976.  He recorded songs on two group albums. He was crowned three (3) times calypso king of Soufriere 79, 80 & 81” and winning the coveted title of “Road march in 1979”

Upon returning to St. Kitts in the summer of 1983, he began preparation for St. Kitts senior monarch competition and was able to make it to the finals that year with his two popular tunes, “Lord Kent Come Back” and ‘’I see Progress’’ but disappointedly did not placed in the top three positions.

He again competed in 1984 and was a finalist but did not place in the finals,  his two songs were “We gone wild”  and ‘’Judge me on my contribution”. He then left St. Kitts in 1985 for the United States.

Over the years he has competed on four (4) occasions in St. Kitts Senior Monarch competition and was always a finalist, 1983, 1984, 1992, & 2009.

His biggest achievement in St. Kitts calypso arena to him was in 1984 when he won the Tourism theme song competition at the Factory Social Centre with a song titled “Welcome Mr. Tourist”.

The songs he thinks that he will be most remembered for in St. Kitts are “Lord Kent Come Back”, “I See Progress” and “Stop De Beating”.

At this point in his career he has no desire to compete for St. Kitts Calypso Monarch, he is willing to leave that to the up and coming young calypsonians.

“At the moment my musical career has taken a step in the right direction. I have released my new CD for 2014 entitled “ENERGY” on June 1st, 2014 in time for St. Lucia Carnival. So far the CD has taken off with two songs doing well on the airwaves in St. Lucia.  The CD has gained momentum in the Virgin Islands, England, USA, Canada, and St. Kitts”, he said when ask what he is presently working on.

“The Cd consists of eleven (11) songs and a variety of beats, I have also added a new producer from St. Lucia on my team his name is Christopher Neal of Big As Life Studio along with Steve ‘Steba’ Dublin of St. Kitts working at G&T recording studio.”

“The Cd was recorded in the two studios with the final product mastered at Big As Life Sound Lab.”

The Cd is now available for purchase online at Cdbaby.com/cd/lordkent and lord kent mp3-music factory as well as outlets in the USA, St Lucia and the Virgin Islands. I can be contacted for purchase on Facebook @ Kent Gonsalves or call Tel# 347-679-0770.

He is currently marketing himself as an International artist from St. Kitts and believes that he is presently doing his best work yet!

Apart from his musical career Lord Kent true profession is in the construction field which he is still actively involved in.

Kent would like to thank all his family, fans, the many D.J’s and the radio stations who plays his music and who have supported him throughout his musical career.
