Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 12th, 2014 - “A Night Before UVI” has been hailed a success by those who attended. Several new and transfer students turned out to a soirée the UVI Alumni Association: St Kitts Chapter held in recognition of their acceptance at the renowned University of the Virgin Islands both St. Thomas and St Croix campuses.
The event served as a formal send-off just before the students leave the island to pursue their studies from this month’s end and January 2015.
In a room decorated with the school’s colors, blue and white, the students were introduced to the executive body then treated to a virtual campus tour via a series of “Why UVI?” themed videos. Several Alumni took turns recalling their experience while matriculated as far back as CVI, the College of the Virgin Islands.
Alumni also highlighted the importance of maximizing on class schedules and transferring credits, benefits of becoming members of organizations and groups, maintaining a high Grade Point Average (GPA) and being recognized by renowned societies including Golden Key and Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund.
“I absolutely loved the idea of a Meet and Greet before arriving to the University of the Virgin Islands. I learned so much about the university and what to expect. My favorite part was definitely hearing about the experiences of the past students. I hope this will be an annual event!” said Kiana Rawlins, Biology Major.
She added, “I'm looking forward to meeting new people, especially from different cultures and backgrounds. Also, I'm excited to do new things and gain new experiences.”
Meanwhile, Michael Hobson (‘85) said he believes enough information was disseminated to the students and extended wishes of success in their endeavors.
Kima Tyson (‘11), Vice President of the Association said, “The Chapter achieved what it set out to [accomplish]. The students who attended were quite informed and it was evident that they had an enjoyable time.”
The Vice President appealed to other alumni to support the act of recruiting prospects and view it as part of their social obligation.
“If only other alum would see that the Association is not a waste of their time but a way of giving back to their community.”
Twenty-one students will be headed to further their tertiary level education, eighteen to the St Thomas campus and three to the St Croix campus.
