Gov’t piggybacking on Unity’s ideas…says Richards

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SUGGESTING that it is bereft of ideas, Team Unity has accused the government of piggybacking on the ideas and policies which it has offered to the people should the Team be successful during the upcoming general elections.

During a Team Unity press conference last week, Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Number Five and Political Leader of the People Action Movement (PAM) – the Hon. Shawn Richards – said the political movement is offering the people of this country “real hope” through “concrete policies”.

He said the Team has informed the country of these policies and the government has tried to implement their version of the same.

“The message that Team Unity has been giving to the people of this country continues to resonate. Not only does it continue to resonate but the government itself…is making attempts to do what Team Unity has indicated we are going to do for the people of this country.”

Giving examples to support his claim, Richards spoke of relief from the high cost of electricity and the reduction of mortgages on government-issued houses.

“When we spoke of the high cost of electricity we saw the government making an attempt through the surcharge to reduce the price of electricity… We are saying to persons who owe electricity…we have said that if you owe the government from when the Electricity Department was under government, that debt would be completely forgiven; unlike the government which has now put in place some sort of hire purchase scheme where you have to be paying monthly for the next three years in order to reduce the debt.”

“…When we said to the people of this country that we are going to decrease the mortgages on the government-distributed homes, we saw the government making an attempt to reduce them… In regards to what they have offered the home owners, we are saying…that the reduction that we intend to give you will be more than what the government has now given you.”

Richards also made mention of the reduction of VAT and the implementation of a national insurance scheme.

“When we said to the persons who would have gone on to university that one of our policies would be to ensure that their payments to Development Bank are lowered, we saw the government making an attempt to do that. When we said to the people of the country that we intend to reduce VAT, we heard the Prime Minister saying that they are studying it to see if to some extent they can do it…

“We have already done our studies in regards to VAT and that is why we are saying we will remove VAT from food unlike the government who is saying to persons well we are going to see if we can offer some sort of reduction.

“When we said to the people of this country that we are going to put a National Health Insurance Scheme in place, we heard the government saying to the people of this country well that is something that they are looking at and up until now we cannot see it.”

Other initiatives which Richards said Team Unity would implement if successful at the polls include the removal of VAT from funeral expenses and the permanent reduction of Development Bank student loans

“So we continue to give the people of this country a positive message and we continue to say to the people of this country that what we intend to put in place is better than what the government is now offering you.”
