BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOLLOWING the hosting of the Liamacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in St. Kitts, Minister of Sports the Hon. Glen Phillip has publicly applauded all who played a part in ensuring the success of the games.

During Monday’s (Aug. 18) sitting of Parliament, the Sports Minister said gratitude is owed to a number of individuals who gave their unwavering support.

“This leads me to thanking senator Hon. Richard Skerritt and his supporting staff at the Ministry of Tourism, who got the vision and fanned the flames. Together we explored the idea of bringing CPL to our shores and thank God it was a resounding success.

“I want also to thank the many local volunteers, grounds men and entertainers who - each in their own way - had the right mix of experience, ingenuity and dedication for getting the job done.”

Phillip had special praise for Vernon Springer of the Ministry of Sports and businessman Author Sharpe.

“I must publicly award the hard work of Mr. Vernon Springer Senior - Sports officer in the Ministry of Sport. I applaud him for his passion in which he worked from the inception of the idea right down to the successful hosting of these games.

“I also want to thank the local agents and distributers of products and services… Our local business community did become integrally-involved in creating the vibrant atmosphere that got us to attend the games.

“I want to publicly thank Mr. Arthur Sharpe and the Carambola Beach Club for their outstanding sponsorship to the games, for the prizes of Man of the Match for the games hosted here and the man of the series. You have set the bar high and I applaud the business acumen that drew Mr. Sharp into sponsoring the games so willingly.”

He also acknowledged the support of his Cabinet colleagues for the backing they showed when the idea first came about.

“I want at this juncture to thank my colleagues in the Federal Cabinet of Ministers. When St. Kitts and Nevis - as a non-franchise territory- hosting the CPL was brought to the Cabinet, you supported me and the idea. I thank each of you for your overwhelming support, especially the best opening bowler of the CPL games, our very own Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas. Thank you for believing in me and this effort.”

Phillip also thanked the patrons who attended the games.

“I now turn attention to the people who made the greatest difference. The man, the woman, the boy and girl in every village and town in every corner of this country, what an unstoppable force we were as a country. We came together in our numbers not to cheer for any home team but to show the world that St. Kitts and Nevis is sexy.

“I want to thank therefore the people of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis for their awesome show of support. The support of the people was savoured and felt at every game and the concert.”

Phillip stated that the Federation ought to be proud of the government’s investments in sporting infrastructure.

“We have never been afraid to welcome the world and the world has never been disappointed when St. Kitts and Nevis is the host. Today we look back to the 2014 Caribbean Premier League and we can be proud of the investments that we have made in sport infrastructure in this country.

“The millions spent on upgrading Warner Park in 2005 and 2006 have reaped dividends over the last two weeks that we can only be measured in boundless sports-tourism and best destination tourist potential.”
