Prostate Screening Project Complete

By: Rotary Club, Press Release

BASSETERRE - August 7, 2014 - The Rotary Club of St.Kitts is pleased to announce the successful completion of its first annual prostate screening programme carried out in collaboration with Island Medical Specialists and The Mount Olive Masonic Lodge.

Under the programme 150 men between the ages of 40 and 70 and resident in St.Kitts underwent free prostate screening on 19th July 2014 at The Mount Olive Lodge at Taylor's Range, Basseterre. Testing was carried out by Drs. Dwayne Thwaites, Brian Cohen and Dr. Cavelle Kelsick-Hobson supported by an experienced team of nurses and lab technicians. Support was also provided by a group of medical students from Windsor University.

The testing consisted of digital examination by the doctors and the taking of blood samples for laboratory testing of PSA levels.
All blood samples taken from the participants were subsequently tested and the test results have been sent to the doctor or other named representative of each participant.

The Rotary Club of St.Kitts raised its funding of EC$10,000 for the project through its Pork and Beer Fest which was held at the TDC Cecil Roberts Sports Complex on 1st March 2014. The Mount Olive Lodge also contributed to the project in cash and the use of its premises.
The club intends that the prostate programme will be conducted annually as will the Pork and Beer Fest whose major sponsors are CARIB Brewery and TDC.

The club thanks Dr. Thwaites and his team for providing their invaluable medical services to the programme. The club also thanks the Mount Olive Masonic Lodge and all other sponsors of this important health care programme.
