RIBIN among matters for discussion at CARICOM Inter-Sessional, says PM

By: Erasmus Williams, CUOPM

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MARCH 10TH 2009 (CUOPM) – The Regional Integrated Ballistic Information Network (RIBIN) as well as deforestation, renewable energy and sustainable development as well as the upcoming Fifth Summit of the Americas will be discussed at this week’s Twentieth Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government in Belize, St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has disclosed.

“Food security, youth, gender, sports and culture as well as the Cariforum/EU Economic Partnership Agreement and justice and governance,” will also be discussed said Dr. Douglas during his weekly radio programme “Ask the Prime Minister” on Tuesday.

“Heads of Government will be grappling with everything of import to the people of the region – including crime within the extent to which CARICOM Governments are sharing intelligence and coordinating anti-gang strategies in order to meet – head on – this phenomenon that is so alien, corrosive, and unwelcome in our culture,” he said on the one-hour programme, which is syndicated on three radio stations.

Dr. Douglas, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that Caribbean governments have agreed to move forward on the Regional Integrated Ballistic Information Network, or RIBIN.

“This will be discussed in Belize. This system will be implemented by the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security. Under RIBIN, the tracing of firearms and ballistics, in particular, will be tackled not just on a country by country basis, but indeed as a comprehensive, seamless undertaking that transcends national boundaries,” said Dr. Douglas, who left Tuesday afternoon for Belmopan, the Belizean capital.
