Monday, September 8 – Assistant Marine Officer Mr. Shadee Saleh of the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry is the recipient of the 88th Lieutenant Commander William B. Turek Award after successfully completing the Marine Inspectors Course at the United States Coast Guard Training School in Virginia.

The prestigious accolade is awarded five times annually. It is presented at the end of each course to the graduate, who most exemplifies the personal qualities necessary in a Coast Guard Marine Inspector. These qualities are professionalism, integrity, flexibility, and an overriding concern for the safety of vessel personnel.

According to Mr. Saleh, “It feels awesome to have received the award from my classmates. It just shows that no matter where you go, once you apply yourself, people will respect you once you give them a reason to.”

He added, “My colleagues recognised the fact that I wasn’t there to waste time, but to do work.”

Mr. Saleh is now a certified marine inspector along with Assistant Marine Officer Mr. Andy T. George who also participated in the training programme. Both officers are now better equipped to inspect various types of ships in the Territory.

The course covered several areas including certification, navigation, communications, lifesaving equipment, firefighting equipment, engineering, electrical arrangements, welding, plan approval, stability and barges.

Mr George said the course was challenging and rewarding as he is more aware of the intricacies of the boating industry and safety.

“We are now better equipped to inspect various types of ships in the Territory such as passenger vessels and small commercial vessels”, Mr. George stated.

Meanwhile, Director of the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry (VISR), Mr. John Samuel stated, “I am extremely proud of Mr. George and Mr. Saleh, two young Virgin Islanders who have, as ambassadors of this Territory, represented the British Virgin Islands and the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry exceptionally well.”

He added, “Their success is a clear indication of the level of technical expertise at the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry, and the Department’s continued ability to competently implement international safety standards to our maritime industries.” Mr. Samuel noted.

He explained that the training of officers in marine inspection is crucial to the department’s quest in delivering the highest quality of professional marine inspection services, while promoting effective marine safety standards.

The Virgin Islands Shipping Registry seeks to ensure that Virgin Islands ships can safely, securely and efficiently enjoy the freedom of the seas and the support of a vigorous and effective Maritime Administration.
