ROAD TOWN, Tortola-MOTOR vehicle and pedestrian traffic collided with deadly consequences Monday (Mar. 9) in Cane Garden Bay as a man was tragically run over, police officials said.

An official statement from the Police Information Office indicated that Casim Badoo, 34, of Round Hill was reportedly lying across the middle of Round Hill Road around 6 pm when a vehicle ran over him. At this time Badoo is believed to have been mentally challenged.

According to the police statement, “paramedics promptly responded and transported Badoo to Peebles Hospital however he subsequently died”.

Though the police did not release many details surrounding the accident, they did indicate that the driver of the vehicle has not been charged at this time.

Inspector Kenrick Headley, Head of the Traffic Investigation Unit, said that drivers must always exercise extreme caution to prevent these types of accidents from happening unnecessarily.

“Accidents involving pedestrians are on the increase and drivers are expected to reduce speeds and exercise due consideration especially while driving through villages, school zones and areas where there are no sidewalks.”

Furthermore, Headley said pedestrians have an equal responsibility to “exercise common sense and good road safety skills when walking in high traffic areas”.
