CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE community of Stoney Grove was plunged into mourning today with the news of the hanging death of one of its residents.
Shakila Chaitram, who came to Nevis from Guyana with her husband some 16 years ago, was found hanging from the rafters of the front patio of her house by a neighbour.
The neighbour reportedly passed and saw her standing on the patio and became suspicious when he passed back sometime later in the afternoon and saw her in the same position. He investigated and raised an alarm when he realised she was motionless.
The husband, Shawn Chaitram, fought to remain composed as he told SKNVibes that they had planned to visit Guyana later this year. Shakila’s mother was inconsolable as she struggled to come to grips with the sudden death of her daughter.
Friends and neighbours, who gathered to commiserate with Shawn, described Shakila as a nice person who always had a smile for everyone. One man said she never passed anyone without a greeting.
Apart from her husband of 22 years, Shakila leaves to mourn one son – 19-year-old Kumkarran.
