Friday, September 12, 2014 – In an effort to reduce the number of fires within the Territory; the Fire and Rescue Services department is encouraging residents to take precautionary measures where possible to prevent fires.

According to Acting Chief Fire Officer, Mr. William Penn, it is of utmost importance that the fire department advises the public on how to prevent fires to their properties.

“Since January there were 123 fires recorded in the Territory, 14 of those fires were buildings. I will like to encourage persons to adhere to these safety tips because our lives and properties are at risk.” Mr. Penn noted.

The department is asking persons not to overload extension cords, to frequently have their electrical wiring system checked, ensure that matches are kept out the reach of children, avoid leaving lit candles next to flammable materials, and avoid smoking in bed and cooking when exhausted.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works, Anthony McMaster, said that the Ministry through the Fire and Rescue Services department will be hosting fire safety briefings with public officers as earlier as next week. He also gave the assurance that these briefings will be offered to other members of the Territory by years end.”

The Fire and Rescue Services department aims to protect life and property from the ravages of fire and other natural and man-made disasters. Additionally, the department provides the people of the Virgin Islands with a caring and operationally efficient service that is consistently of high quality and provides value for money.
