Eight receive Warren Tyson Memorial Scholarships Programme

    BASSETERRE, St. Kittsember 12, 2014Sept – EIGHT promising students - who have just begun their secondary education – will receive financial assistance through this and their college education – having been recently awarded scholarships under the TDC Warren C Tyson (WTC) Memorial Scholarship Programme.

     

    Officially marking their induction into the programme, a ceremony was held over the past weekend at the TDC Training Room which was attended by representatives of the TDC, officials of the Ministry of Education, past and current WTC scholars and the new inductees. 
     
    The student recipients are Kai Davis who left the Joycelyn Liburd Primary School and is now attending the Charlestown Secondary School; K-Tara Huggins formerly of the St. James’ Primary School and currently of the Gingerland Secondary School; Washington Archibald High School student Alisa Joseph, formerly of the Deane Glasford Primary School and Asania Alexander of the Edgar T. Morris Primary School but who now attends the Cayon High School.
     
    Josh Dolphin who attended the Saddlers Primary School and who now attends the Saddlers Secondary School, Allenzio Wigley who formerly attended the Tyrell Williams Primary School and currently attends the Verchild’s High School; Johnette Williams who graduated from the Sandy Point Primary School and now attends the Charles E. Mills Secondary School and Raheem Phipps who has advanced from the Irishtown Primary School to the Basseterre High School are also recipients awardees.
     
    Chief Education Officer Clarice Cotton lauded TDC for its initiative in assisting the Ministry of Education to fulfil its mandate.
     
    She said the programme ensures that students gain work ethics and provides them with mentorship and on-the-job experience.
     
    Cotton urged the students to capitalise on and make the best of the opportunities which are being afforded them.
     
    Chairman of the TDC Group Earle Kelly offered sound advice to the scholarship recipients, nudging them to listen to and obey their mentors, teachers and “all adults who are worthy of emulation”, get along with their peers, join a club, conduct themselves properly at all times and go to church.
     
    Nicolas Menon – WCT Programme Director – also congratulated the students on their achievement and in delivering the featured address and Director of Project Strong Dale Phipps, a 1988 WCT Scholar, painted a very real picture of persistence and hard work being the precursors to success.
     
    Expounding on the theme, Phipps said this success can be had on personal levels as well as in generating economic activity in the Federation.
     
    He said all inclusive of parents, key players within the nation and even the children themselves must resolve to invest in their education if economic growth and advancement is to be achieved.
     
    The Warren C. Tyson Programme was initiated in 1981 and has to date assisted some 220 students to the tune of in excess of $1.5M. Students on the programme receive assistance throughout their secondary and tertiary education tenure.
