Friday, September 12, 2014 – Eighty copies of a book titled “The Pentateuch” which seeks to reinforce spiritually in its readers were distributed to the Enis Adams Primary School yesterday, September 11.

This latest move is in keeping with government’s thrust to enhance steps aimed at advancing reading and spiritual literacy.

‘The Pentateuch: My First Hunt for the Holy Scriptures’ is a locally authored book written by Ms. Ayana Hull. It is the first in a six volume series, which simplifies the first five books of the Bible in a modern way for tweens, teens and young adults.

At yesterday’s presentation ceremony, copies of the book were presented to students of grades four, five and six. Principal Ms. Carlene Parsons and the President and Vice President of the Enis Adams Primary School Inter-Act Club, a youth arm of the Rotary Club also received copies.

The Ministry of Education and Culture collaborated with the Rotary Club of Road Town and Nagico Insurances to distribute “The Pentateuch” at the Enis Adams Primary School. Minister for Education Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn congratulated the Rotary Club for their drive to develop young people and Ms. Hull for penning the book.

Highlighting the book’s significance he said, “One thing that is very important and is a part of who we are as Virgin Islanders is that we are very spiritual people. This book helps to reinforce that spirituality in us.”

“What Ms. Hull has done is significant, the Minister continued. “She took out some of the lessons from the bible, some of the very important stories and put them together so that you can understand what the bible is saying to you.”

In her remarks, the local author Ms. Ayana Hull lamented the loss of biblical principles in our society.

“What is happening to us I think is that we are losing the spiritual, biblical and moral foundation in our young people and I think it is important for us to try and get it back,” she said.

Ms. Hull explained that if persons read the bible stories, they can pull out the morals which she believes are missing in society today. “It is my humble view, that it is a lack of this biblical foundation that our parents gave us that we are not able to pass on to this generation. So I really hope that you students are able to read it (The Pentateuch) and get the spiritual and moral foundation in addition to the academics,” she said.
Assistant District Governor for Rotary in the Virgin Islands Mrs. Delma Maduro disclosed that the collaborative effort was another demonstration by the Rotary Club to assist in the advancement of literacy and reading in the Virgin Islands.

“Without the ability to read, without a sound education life may not be as well as it can be for you. Education helps to take us out of poverty,” Mrs Maduro said. She went on to outline the benefits of a good education stating that it helps in the promotion of world peace, a better life in our community and in our own personal development. “I do encourage you to take good care of these books that are going to be handed to you and read, read it well, commit to heart and be guided by it as you continue your life’s journey,” she told the students.

President of the Rotary Club of Road Town Mr. Shan Mohammed and Principal Carleen Parsons also delivered remarks.

Earlier this week, presentations were given at other schools including the Joyce Samuel and the Althea Scatliffe Primary Schools.

The Ministry of Education and Culture continues to support the work of local authors and the promotion of literacy and reading throughout all schools.
