Ex-Sugar Workers will be paid ALL monies owed declares Dr. Timothy Harris

Press Release (TUCOM)

Basseterre, St.Kitts (TUCOM):- The dynamic leader of the powerful St.Kitts-Nevis Tri-party Alliance Team UNITY has declared that ALL monies owed to Sugar Workers will be paid in FULL by his incoming Team UNITY Administration

Dr. Harris has continually promised that the wrongs meted out to Sugar Workers in the country will be made right under his Team UNITY administration. He reiterated this during an interview on sugar City FM’s “Straight Talk” programme.

The Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #7 said that resources are available for all former sugar workers to be paid their due funds which they would have earned during their tenure at the sugar estates which in some cases spanned over 40 years.

Dr Harris declared in a prior statement that Team Unity would:

Ensure that all former sugar workers will be compensated. who were denied or short paid severance for which they had just entitlement. Ex sugar workers in St Kitts were short paid $16 million in severance payments. Many received token payments not withstanding that they had given their entire working life to the industry. Such disdainful treatment came after Denzil Douglas had promised the workers that their take home payouts would be better under 1961 Trade Union Agreement with St Kitts Manufacturing Corporation (SSMC) than would pertain under the Employment Act.

Harris again reiterated this commitment and said “Sixteen million plus interest would be made available to all those who had been robbed and denied and short changed their monies. I want to remember Allen Rubien out of saddlers, he worked long and hard in the sugar industry and at the end of it had nothing to show for it.”

“I am appealing to you in the city and the country areas, you know that you have worked in the sugar industry, you know that you have put in at least 10 years of working in the sugar industry and you know that you deserve something for that hard work that you did,” Harris concluded

Team UNITY has included in it’s Prosperity for All Agenda a commitment to pay all monies owed to Sugar Workers after the 2005 closure of the Industry.

In addition to the payment of owed monies to Sugar Workers other workers are expected to benefit significantly under Team UNITY’s PROSPERITY AGENDA with the implementation of the long service gratuity benefits. The Severance Fund would be increased to allow for these payments.
