BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Nigerian population in St. Kitts is celebrating the independence of their country today (Oct. 1) in grand style with a variety night/dinner to be held at the St. Kitts Marriott Hotel.

Today, Nigeria – a country on the African continent – is observing its 54th anniversary of independence and for the third consecutive year, the Nigerian Students Association (NSA) would display their culture, their heritage and cuisine at The Ball Room.

In an interview with SKNVibes, Vice President of the Association Earnest Okeugo and Public Relations Officer Chris Ntewo explained that in addition to excellent African-inspired cuisine and good company, the variety portion of the event would provide a snapshot of the timeline of Nigeria’s transition from British rule into independence and to their 54th anniversary.

“In every society, they have their own culture. In Nigerian culture, we have the dance groups and we are going to showcase that. There will be an aspect of drama also which will show how it all started, before Nigeria got its independence, how we were under the British before we gained our independence. We will also show how far we have come since becoming independent.

They have extended an invitation for individuals to join them in their celebration.

“We will have African songs being played and the dress code, if you have traditional African wear, feel free to wear it but you can wear anything you wish as it is a dinner setting. We want everyone to come out and be a part of it. There is going to be a variety show, it is going to be fun, there will be delicious African food, come and celebrate with us. We invite you to come and join us and invite as many people as you can. We want everyone to feel free to attend.”

The NSA executive members also spoke of a fashion show will form an integral part of the event.

“Also a fashion show will be held to show the difference in culture. Out of Nigeria, there are 36 states and out of those are different cultures. In Nigeria we have four major ethnic groups: Hausa, Yoruba and the Igbos and from those we have 100 plus ethnic groups and the displays will show the different cultures.”

Tickets are being sold at $50 each and can be obtained from members of the NSA.
