Has Min. Skerritt resigned from Cabinet?

Minister Richard Skerritt
By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WHILE rumours are still floating about suggesting that Minister of Government Senator the Hon. Richard Skerritt has resigned from the Cabinet of Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, Cabinet Secretary Joseph Edmeade has discarded them as being untrue.

The rumours have been circulating for a number of days now and specifically suggest that not only has Skerritt – for whatever reason - resigned but that the Prime Minister has refused to accept it.

SKNVibes – having caught wind of the rumours, made attempts to contact Skerritt – who functions as the Minister of International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs and Tourism and International Transport – via his mobile phone but they were unsuccessful. Efforts were also made tocontact him via the St. Kitts Tourism Authority but this publication was told that the Minister is not on island.

Attempts were also made to contact Prime Minister Douglas but no success was realised in that regard.

After several attempts however, contact was made with Cabinet Secretary Edmeade to who said the rumours are “totally false”.

“If Mr. Skerritt had tendered his resignation from Cabinet, that would have made public news and somebody would have had to make an official notice… I don’t even understand what the question is all about because I don’t understand where people get all these rumours from…”

Edmeade questioned “why people are so gossipy” and reiterated that Skerrit had not resigned nor was his resignation rejected by the Prime Minister.

He informed that Skerritt attended Monday’s (Sept. 29) Cabinet meeting and has since left the island on official government business.

“Mr. Skerritt left here on official business, to go abroad on government business. He has official authorisation by the Prime Minister to travel. Mr. Skerritt was in Cabinet up to Monday night late…

“I am the Cabinet Secretary and if Mr. Skerritt resigned, I must know…”
