Wednesday, October 8, 2014 - His Excellency, Governor John S. Duncan, made his first official visit to Her Majesty Prison on October 6. Governor Duncan was accompanied by Minister for Education and Culture, Honorable Myron Walwyn.

While on site, Governor Duncan observed the operations at the prison. He also interacted with the inmates; who discussed areas of improvement they would like to see implemented at the penal institution.

The Governor expressed his enthusiasm with the rehabilitation programme at the prisons and discussed ways in which the system can be improved. Minister of Education Honourable Myron Walwyn spoke to the importance of the programme and noted that he was particularly pleased with its progress. The officials were  given a tour of the music studio, and the inmates shared their experience about their recent performance at the New Life Baptist Church.

Minister Walwyn outlined that the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Governor’s Office both share the responsibility of the prison and that it is important for the new Governor to be updated on the current operations and proposed improvements.

Governor John S. Duncan was sworn in as the 16th Governor of the Virgin Islands on August 15. In the six weeks since taking office he has spent time meeting with Government Ministers, senior government officials and members of law enforcement agencies in addition to other relevant agencies and departments.
