BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MINISTER of Sports the Hon. Glen Phillip has indicated that EC$26M would be allocated in the upcoming budget for the establishment of an indoor sporting facility as well as for upgrades for other sporting facilities on the island.

Minister Phillip made the announcement while recently speaking with SKNVibes in an exclusive interview.

“We continue to work as a government… We have just places $26 Million in the budget for a new Basketball City. We have seen upgrades in different facilities; you can look at Silver Jubilee and Warner Park. That has nothing to do with the other facilities around the island.

“We are also looking at netball and tennis also. They are a myriad of sports that not only need upgrading but need new facilities as well and that is about to be underway.”

This publication asked Phillip for a proposed timeline for the completion of the construction of the new basketball facility.

“In terms of timing, the good thing about the basketball facility is that we already have the drawings so we have cleared that bench mark.”

The Sports Minister indicated that two areas are being eyed as the possible home of the facility but a decision has yet to be made on that.

“We are looking at two different locations at this time at one point we thought about having a multipurpose facility that had a performing arts centre within it. I am not certain if that will happen but in terms of a basketball, netball and volleyball facility that is what we need at this time.”

Previously, the Sports Minister had indicated that renovations to the existing basketball facility, Basketball City, would be made to include the construction of a roof and dressing rooms.
