CHARLESTOWN NEVIS -- The Charlestown Public Library will from Monday March 16 host a week-long exhibition in celebration of International Poetry Day instead of the usual one day exhibition. Three poets will each day make presentations on Choice FM Radio, while a renowned poet will appear on Nevis Television.

“From this year we thought we will do it differently” said Librarian Lornette Hanley. “Usually we have one day of exhibition and we have the poetry readings in the evening. What I have noticed happening for the past two years is that the poets are really entertaining themselves and so we said, we have to do something differently.”

The actual International Poetry Day will be observed on Saturday March 21, but the exhibition at the library runs from Monday March 16 through Monday March 23. During the period Monday to Friday Choice FM has consented to host three poets each day who will read their work to the public at different times of the day.

“We came up with the idea of having the exhibition for a week and then we thought we will add a little spice in having a televised interview with one of the poets and we thought we would use Christine Clarke-Nisbett especially as she has made it to an international world poetry event.”

The Nevis-born poet and mother of three, who retired as a prison officer on medical grounds after serving for more than 12 years, rose to fame when in 2004 she wrote a poem ‘Be Confident’ that earned her an induction as an honorary ‘International Poet of Merit of 2005-2006’.

The ceremony where Christine Clarke-Nisbett received her award took place during the International Society of Poets’ 2005 convention and symposium at the Washington Hilton Hotel from 19-21 August 2005.

“There I competed in a poetry contest where we had about 1,100 poets competing and it was remarkable,” recalled Christine. “I felt really elated mostly of all to see me, Christine, coming from a small island as our Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and being able to be like an ambassador going out to represent my country and to use my talent to really give God glory and reach out to others.”

The televised interview, with Poet Christ, will be conducted by Librarian Lornette Hanley on Tuesday March 17 in the afternoon, and will later be aired by the Nevis Television Channel 8 on the Cable in Nevis.
