(Castries, October 20, 2014) – The National Insurance Corporation (NIC) has been awarded for its continued support of the Toastmasters Program.  At a ceremony on Thursday October 16, 2014, at the head office of the National Insurance Corporation (NIC), Toastmasters International (TMI) President Mr. Mohammed Murad presented NIC Director Mr. Matthew Mathurin with the Toastmasters International Corporate Recognition Award “for enhancing employee engagement through continuous support of Toastmasters communication and leadership programs.” The non-profit Toastmasters International develops communication and leadership skills, through a worldwide network of clubs.

Mr. Mathurin has contributed to the program as a founding Toastmaster having spearheaded the formation of the NIC Toastmasters club in 1999 and presently, as CEO of the Corporate Sponsor. He says the NIC will continue to support Toastmasters International, which grooms leaders and communicators.

“We look at the Toastmasters so integrally that we have incorporated it into our training program, so that members of staff are required for promotion to certain positions, to undergo a level of training at Toastmasters. Our focus is moving away from management to leadership...This (award) is a token of not my effort but recognition that the Institution is forward thinking enough to support such an initiative. I am accepting it not on my own behalf, but on the behalf of those persons who have assisted and on behalf of the National Insurance Corporation,” he said.

Toastmasters International President Mr. Mohammed Murad, applauded the local Toastmasters International chapter for its work over the years and says the goal is to ensure that the organisation continues along the path of growth.

“The expectation is that we grow Toastmasters in each and every corner of the world, especially in this Region, because there is great potential. What we look at in Toastmasters is that for every 20,000 people, we should have a club. This visit is part of a planned schedule where the international president and the officers visit different districts, support them, explore avenues of growth and share experiences in order to grow as an organization,” he said.

The award presentation preceded the official start of activities as part of Toastmasters International District 81 Conference.  The October 17-19 event was held at the Royal St. Lucian and Rex Resorts, under the theme “Creating Connections, Building relationships through Toastmasters.”
