Basseterre, St. Kitts – October 21, 2014 (SCASPA): Over twenty-eight (28) large bags of garbage were collected on a coastal beach cleanup by the staff members of the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) on October 18, 2014. During the early hours of the morning, members of the Authority in collaboration with the Department of Physical Planning and Environment cleaned the beach that is bordered between Bakers Point (Rifle Range) and the snapper farm (behind the Landfill).
CEO of SCASPA, Mr. Jonathan Bass said that the event was in keeping with SCASPA’s aim to protect the environment for a more sustainable tourism industry.
“As a major stakeholder in the tourism industry and a socially responsible organization, we thought it best to host a beach cleanup that will ensure the conservation of one of our tourism products – the beach. We each have a responsibility to ensure that St. Kitts remains one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean, so we must make it our duty to protect our beaches. We were overwhelmed by the amount of trash we found on the beach and encourage locals to keep the beaches clean so that our tourism product and wildlife will not be compromised. SCASPA will continue to take bold steps toward protecting St. Kitts and leading in coastal and marine conservation.”
The shoreline trash that was collected by SCASPA was noted by the Department of Physical Planning and Environment to be added to the national database.
