BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH the 2014 Latin Festival activities gaining considerable momentum ahead of the long-awaited Latin Fiesta, sponsors, patrons and specially-invited guests enjoyed a relaxing evening on Monday (Oct. 20) at Caribbean Cinemas where a Red Carpet and movie premier event was held.

As the guests arrived and had their photographs taken in true Red Carpet style, there was intermingling, with soft conversations being made over light cuisine and choice beverages.

The highlight of the evening undoubtedly was the featured presentation of a Spanish comedy titled ‘Casi Treinta’, which is English translates to ‘Almost Thirty’.

The presence of the film’s writer and director Alejandro Sugich of Mexico was an added and welcomed perk of the evening.

Prior to the showing of the movie, Executive Director of the Latin Festival Michelle Demming reminded of the main objectives of the Festival which are to enhance cultural exchanges amongst Kittitians, Nevisians and Latinos, to highlight similarities between the different Caribbean and Latin American countries and promote tourism and economic activity within St. Kitts and Nevis.

Latin Festival Chairman Jose Rosa said culture is a critical pillar in the development of any society and the fact that the film is being showed and its director was flown to the island, is testament to the Latin Festival’s commitment to cultural integration.

Director Sugich also spoke prior to the commencement of the film, explaining that it was about the importance of making one’s dreams come true.

He said he was privileged to be in St. Kitts and suggested that he is looking into featuring the island in one of his projects.

“I’m here to know your country because we have several projects to make in different countries and I love to do something with you guys here…”

    Casi Treinta

The film, fitted with English subtitles - portrayed a young man whose passion for writing was rekindled only after he fell in love with a girl in her late teenage years. After being offered a “dream job” he drifted from his writing dream and was consumed in the rigors of the new job to the point where his relationship was affected and eventually ended.

He fell in love a second time and after asking for the young lady’s hand in marriage, proceeded to spend time with a group of his male friends and his family. The proposal fell through and while dealing with that loss, he learnt of the demise of one of his friends.

The double event marked the inauguration of the 2014 Latin Festival which runs from October 20 to culminate with the Latin Fiesta mega party on Sunday (Oct. 26).
