Basseterre, St. Kitts (Wednesday, October 29, 2014) – The participants of the 2014 Digicel KickStart Academy, currently underway in Jamaica, broke out into applause as football Legend Paulo Ferreira visited during Day 2 of training. Ferreira is a retired Portuguese footballer that played as a Defender. He was known for his versatility and ability to play on both the right and left side of defense.
Ferreira was signed by José Mourinho for FC Porto in 2002. He won the league title in both of his seasons at Porto, as well as the 2003 UEFA Cup Final and 2004 UEFA Champions League Final.
He then followed Mourinho to Chelsea in 2004, winning honours including three Premier League titles and four FA Cups as well as another UEFA Champions League Cup and the UEFA Europa Cup before retiring in 2013.
Ferreira who has many accolades to his football career visited the prestigious Digicel KickStart Academy at Sabina Park and gave the aspiring footballers a pep talk.
“You have to be disciplined and focused to play the game of football. There are going to be tough and trying times but in the end if you stay determined, you will reach your goal” were inspirational words from Ferreira to the aspiring footballers.
Ferreira encouraged the boys to do their best and congratulated Digicel for such a venture in putting on the Digicel KickStart Academy.
The Digicel KickStart Academy is now in its eight (8) year and saw three aspiring footballers from all Digicel Caribbean Territories travelling to Jamaica to train with coaches of the world-renowned Chelsea FC.
Johsiah Imo, Tyquan Terrell and Jamihk Gumbs were chosen to represent St. Kitts and Nevis at this year’s Digicel KickStart Academy and have been doing very well since their arrival on Saturday.
Ferreira had a brief talk with the representatives from SKN and told them simply “Do not give up, always strive to be the best.”
