BASSETERRE, St. Kitts-THIEVES operating in the Buckley’s Site area have become emboldened in recent weeks and taken to holding up motorists that are passing through the area.

In an email obtained by SKNVibes, it was reported by Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine Director of Security Lynell Nolan that a thief had attacked and robbed a person leaving the school on March 13.

“One of our staff members’ husband was traveling on a road in the Buckleys Site area when he noticed a piece of wood across the road.  He came out of his vehicle to move the wood at which time someone came up behind him and placed a hard object in his back.  The person proceeded to take items from the victim’s pockets,” the email stated.

The email further states that other objects had been used in the past to block the road, such as garbage cans, and when drivers leave their vehicles to remove them a hiding burglar would enter the vehicle, remove items and quietly wait for the person to drive away from the area.

Nolan said that the victims often do not know they have been robbed until they arrive at their destination and notice their items are missing.

SKNVibes contacted the Police Force’s Public Relations Officer Inspector Cromwell Henry, who said that he had no information regarding the March 13 incident.

“This is the first I am hearing of it. We have not had that report, but that is not to say that it didn’t happen. If it had been reported, however, I believe it would have been reported in our morning briefings.”

Despite not being aware of the particular crime, Henry said that pillaging stopped vehicles was not a new offense in the Federation.
“We have had that happen in the past, but I am not aware of any such incidents happening in the Buckley’s Site area,” he said. “We will definitely look into it.”

Henry advised all motorists to be aware of their surroundings while driving, and if they come upon a suspicious roadblock to “drive around it or leave the area if possible”.
