Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 12, 2014 (SKNIS): The Charlestown Fire Station in Nevis is presently undergoing numerous upgrades in order to increase fire safety and working conditions in the Federation.

Acting Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Everette O’Garro outlined the work being carried out, stating that it would benefit not only the island but also the staff.

“The works being undertaken at the Charlestown Fire Station are refurbishing and addition,” said O’Garro. “On completion, we would have added a barrack for female fire officers, a recreation room, and an Alert Room. Additionally, the entire station is now fully air-conditioned.”

The CFO stated that this new addition will present much needed space.

“The recreational room will double as a staff development area, which would be used for the executing of theoretical training sessions, important meetings, presentation of lectures,” he stated. “This would go a long way in increasing and continuously upgrading the skill levels and knowledge that is needed for the job of first responders.

“The new alert room would provide a much improved working environment. This is where important events like receiving emergency calls, the handling of key delicate information and major daily occurrences are recorded.”

O’Garro explained that this new space will offer enhanced privacy “as it is away from outside interference and will afford staff the improved ability to concentrate while handling essential life saving emergency information.”

According to the CFO, the entire project which is funded by the Federal Government is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
