BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Rotary Clubs of St. Kitts, Nevis and Liamuiga are teaming up to hold a Polio Plus weekend from March 20 to 22.

Activities include catamaran cruises, a walkathon and a gala dinner. All funds raised from these events will go towards the worldwide eradication of Polio.

In an exclusive interview with SKNVibes, Rotary Liamuiga President Chris English revealed that in 1985, the clubs’ parent organisation, Rotary International, committed itself to the worldwide eradication of Polio. According to English, since that first pledge, the organisation and its partners have raised approximately US$1B to facilitate the process.

He added that Rotary’s original goal to eradicate the disease in 2004 was unsuccessful and that member organisations over the globe were making one final push.

“Every Rotary Club in the world has been mandated to raise US$1 000 annually for three years. In order to meet this requirement, the Federation’s clubs decided to collaborate for the Polio Plus weekend. We wanted to highlight the contribution of St. Kitts and Nevis as part of the world team in the eradication effort,” English said.

On Friday (Mar. 20), there will be sunset catamaran cruises held under a pirate theme. Persons are required to be dressed in pirate outfit and will have access to an open-bar and light refreshment.

Additionally, persons in search of a good meal should patronise the Stone Walls, Rock Lobster, Pride of India and the Spice Mill Restaurants, as a contribution from every dinner that night will go towards the Rotarian effort. Also, anyone who dines at the Royal Grille and Blu Seafood Restaurants in the Marriott either Friday or Saturday night will be able to choose from some special entrees which will also trigger a contribution to the cause.

The Royal St. Kitts Golf Club is the host for Saturday’s (Mar. 21) golf tournament in which the nation’s best golfers are invited to test their skills against one another for a variety of prizes.

In the evening, a gala dinner will be held at the Spice Mill Restaurant on Cockleshell Bay. Popular local band Modern Image is the night’s entertainment and persons can expect to be treated to the restaurant’s unique and scrumptious menu.

English further stated that several of the island’s churches have agreed to circulate collection boxes in support of the initiative. The President stressed that the weekend of activities “offers something for everyone” and promises patrons an exciting, enjoyable time.

Persons interested in participating in any of these events can visit the Rotary Liamuiga website at www.rotaryliamuiga.org or can contact English at 663-3056, Greg Payne at 762-4269 and Charles Morton 662-6975.

Persons who wish to enter the golf tournament can do so by registering at the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club.
