Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 27, 2014 (SKNIS): The official launch of the St. Kitts and Nevis National Yachting Policy has marked another step to facilitate the development of a world-class, sustainable yachting sector.
Officials expect this to contribute to strengthening the economy and improving the quality of life for the local community, while providing a memorable experience for visitors.
At the launching ceremony on Thursday, November 27, Minister of Tourism the Hon. Richard Skerritt stated that the yachting sector is not just limited to arrivals.
“It’s what they (visitors) do when they’re here, how long they stay; what do the people on board do; how many people on board are spending money; what kind of activities and services they are using and how is it helping to generate an improved quality of life for as many people in the country,” the Tourism Minister explained. “That is what this policy addresses. Also, how do we encourage yacht owners to base here and how do we encourage local people to get into the yachting business; is Government encouraging that or not and what are the key linkages into the economy.”
The document also provides best practices to guide the process of developing the yachting sector. Work will commence shortly to develop a strategic plan to implement the provisions of the policy.
The first phase of the Christophe Harbour Marina is near completion and is expected to accommodate the first yacht on the December 09,2014, and employ at least 21 workers for the Marina operations by mid December. Tamarind Cove Marina has also been approved by the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) and construction is expected to commence shortly. St. Kitts Marina is steadily progressing and the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) is in talks to establish a second marina at Port Zante.
Work on the policy commenced in late 2013 by Elizabeth Thompson a former government minister of Barbados and consultant engaged by ECLAC specifically for this project and a presentation on the first draft of the policy was made in January this year. Following that presentation, additional comments and feedback were provided, which resulted in the final version of the policy.
