More comfort for nation’s elders at Cardin Home

Health Planner Andrew Skerritt (R) thanks Circle of Friends while Lynette Liburd (L) and staff members of Cardin Home look on

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SEVENTY-THREE residents of the Cardin Home will now be more comfortable as they live out their days, thanks to a donation by the Toronto-based organisation Circle of Friends.

The donated package consists of bibs, wheelchairs and wheelchair seats, bed tables, laundry sorters and sofa pads for incontinent persons.

Circle of Friends member Lynette Liburd said her organisation was “non-profit, non-political and non-sectarian” and noted all of its members had roots in St. Kitts and Nevis. She expressed her hope that the donation would serve to improve the lives of residents and staff and that this improvement would be reflected in their care and comfort.

Health Planner in the Ministry of Health, Andrew Skerritt thanked the organisation for its charity and stated the Ministry’s pleasure that it was partnering with them in supplying medical equipment that would make the lives of the elderly easier.

“Healthcare is very diverse and extensive. The Ministry cannot do it alone. That is why we encourage non-profit organisations such as Circle of Friends to join with us in improving healthcare and, in particular, geriatric care. A country that helps and takes good care of its elderly is on the path to success,” Skerritt said.

The contribution by Circle of Friends is the Home’s second within the past six months, as the Chevron, West Indies Limited Company, donated food items and toiletries in late December.

The Home has been the nation’s leading facility for geriatrics since its inception in May 1927 when James D. Cardin donated the land to the government of St. Kitts and Nevis. Its staff of 40 nurses, orderlies and supervisors has the mandate to provide basic care and security for the elderly residents.
