Tuesday, December 2, 2014  --  Mr. Sylvester Wattley, a loader with the Solid Waste Management Corporation for some 5 years was selected to attend a six weeks training course (Sustainable Solid Waste Management) in Okinawa, Japan,  from October 9th thru December 1, 2014. Mr. Sylvester Wattley returned on island over the weekend (December 1, 2014) expressing gratefulness to the SWMC and all others who were instrumental in offering him the opportunity to widen his horizons in the varied field of waste management.

During his stint in Japan Mr. Wattley shared experiences, exchanged ideas about best practices, learned new strategies and considered practices for adoption locally. The course in Japan accommodated participants from throughout the Caribbean in a single group whilst there were opportunities to”interact with other participants from Africa, Asia and literally all parts of the globe.” The training course forms part of the Technical and Development Cooperation initiatives that have been in existence between the governments of St. Kitts and Nevis and Japan.

Mr. Wattley referred to the experience as being “very educational”, and stated how “much more aware of the seriousness of (his) role… and the duties we perform each day to keep our federation clean. “I stand ready”, Mr. Wattley continued, “to help educate my community and do my part to help make solid waste management one of the significant factors in a cleaner and friendlier St. Kitts. I look forward to being utilized as a positive influence in the way we dispose of and treat our waste”, Mr. Wattley reiterated.

According to the General Manager, Alphonso Bridgewater, “Mr. Wattley’s selection came about as a result of his persistent and consistent reliability and trustworthiness and his desire to improve his skills, knowledge and competencies in the field.”  “ In fact”, GM Bridgewater continued, Mr. Wattley is settled in the view, and is not afraid to express it, that his intention is to assume top supervisory and managerial leadership positions in the organization.”

Mr. Wattley’s focus whilst in Japan was on productivity, effectiveness and efficiency in the areas of waste collection, landfill maintenance and management, compost station operations and oversight.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) afforded opportunities previously to two other members of Staff of the SWMC in St. Kitts (Mr. Wilmon Mc Call/Mr. Devon Liburd) and one member of the SWMA in Nevis (Ms. Lawrence).

The SWMC will like to extend its appreciation and thanks to the JICA for its significant support and to Mrs. Astona Browne for the critical role she plays in accessing this training. In the words of GM Bridgewater, “this training opportunity fits smugly into the Corporation’s commitment to increase the training opportunities for staff across the different Units and Departments of the Corporation in an effort to add value to the quality of service and any products that the Corporation offers its customers.”
