Operation Future Invited to Address UNDP Conference on Sustainable Human Development and Citizen Security in Barbados

By: Operation Future, Press Release

December 5th, 2014 -- Operation is proud to announce that it’s President and Founder Officer Lauston Percival has been invited to address the UNDP Conference on Sustainable Human Development and Security in Barbados.

The UNDP has recently completed a region wide report on the status of citizen security in the Caribbean and Latin America, the report concludes an urgent need to shift from traditional concepts of state security to a broader multidimensional concept that focuses on citizen security and safety and wellbeing of Caribbean citizens.  To facilitate this shift UNDP is facilitating a sub-regional conference in Barbados December 3rd to 5th with a goal of developing programs to enhance social cohesion & community resilience.

The UNDP report confirms Operation Future’s position that a long term sustainable program designed to address the issues of youth, crime and violence needs to be built around social intervention which address the root cause of youth crime and violence as opposed to the symptoms.  Tradition security methods based in enforcement are designed to address the symptoms, crime, and have been proven to fail in the long term.

Furthermore, heavy handed enforcement as the primary means to address the issues of youth crime and violence although commonly showing short term progress have demonstrated not only a failure to be sustainable but commonly make the problem worse as these method further marginalize communities.  This enforcement approach often materializes in the militarization of police, the result can currently be seen in the demonstrations across the United States as protestors demonstrate their distrust of police.

Officer Percival will be profiling Operation Future’s work at addressing the issues of youth, crime and violence through education of our youth and public, and based on studying the issues in the community, identifying the root cause of the problems and developing programs of empowerment and inclusion.  Officer Percival will profile Operation Future’s Creative Youth Academies in the St Johnson Village and Cotton Ground, Nevis as well as the importance of our work in Her Majesty’s Prison and the role the prison plays in the design of these programs. Operation Future believes that our work in the prison and the Creative Youth Academies is ground breaking in the Caribbean and can establish a precedent for other Caribbean Communities.

Operation Future is again proud to receive international recognition for our work and thanks our supporters in the community for their continued support as we work to develop a long term strategy to bring peace back to our communities.
