Vehicle bursts into flames; woman escapes injury

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – HAD she not reacted quickly in the manner that she did, it is possible that Thelmare Seaton of Palmetto Point would not have escaped from a burning vehicle without injury.

Seaton, according to Acting Fire Chief Everette O’Garro, was operating motor jeep P385 heading west along the airport road when she took note of a strange odour coming from the vehicle.

He said she also saw smoke emanating from the engine compartment, which caused her to detour onto Tegreman Boulevard, New Road before coming to a stop.

No sooner after taking that precautionary measure the vehicle burst into flames, but she was able to escape injury because she hurriedly exited the vehicle.

O’Garro said a unit from the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services Department responded to the incident at about 2:41 p.m. and, by the time they had arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

The fire was extinguished and although Seaton was not injured, she was reportedly traumatised by the incident.

As a word of advice, the Fire Chief (Ag) suggested that vehicle owners “at all times must apply appropriate maintenance to their vehicles and they must always employ the services of qualified, certified technicians when doing so”.
