By: OAS, Press Release

December 15th, 2014  --  The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with representatives of the Permanent Observers accredited to the institution, to review the main activities carried out during this year and to preview the hemispheric agenda for 2015.

During the meeting, Secretary General Insulza recalled the activities carried out by the OAS during 2014, among them the electoral observation missions, actions in support of the peace process in Colombia, and the expansion of the judicial facilitators program, in addition to the work of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission of Women, and other projects.

Secretary General Insulza, who was accompanied during the meeting by the Secretary for External Relations of the OAS, Alfonso Quiñonez, welcomed the support provided by the permanent observers in many areas, and noted that “you play a very important role as strategic partners, and we are very pleased with the support we have received from the permanent observers.”

The OAS created the status of permanent observer in 1972. Currently there are 69 observer countries, in addition to the European Union, that provide cooperation in terms of training, specialized services and equipment, as well as financing for various programs of the Organization.
