Great expectations at Nevis Agriculture Open Day

Eric Evelyn, Communications Officer, Nevis Department of Agriculture
By: Pauline Waruguru, SKNVibes

PROSPECT, Nevis - THE Villa in Charlestown is expected to be a hive of activities on Thursday and Friday (Mar. 26-27) as the Department of Agriculture on Nevis proudly hosts its 15th annual Open Day.

Communications Officer in the Department of Agriculture, Eric Evelyn told SKNVibes that preparations for this popular annual activity are in the final stages and the public could be guaranteed another high-quality exhibition.

Evelyn has assured the public that the current global economic crisis, which has also reached Nevis, would in no way affect the size and standard of the Open Day.

The activity, to be held under the patronage of former Director of Agriculture Samuel Powell, will highlight up to date technology and services offered by the Department of Agriculture and its Allied Agencies as well as technology utilised by farmers.

The Department will also be showcasing other technology that farmers, backyard gardeners and other stakeholders in the agriculture industry can use. The theme for the hosting of this year’s activity is “Promoting Economic Stability Through Greater Agricultural and Marine Efficiency”.

Various demonstrations will form part of the day, including food preparation utilising local fruits and vegetables. A wide range of locally produced fruits, vegetables, meat, meat products, agro processed items, fruit trees, seedlings and ornamentals will be on display as well as for sale.

The Departments of Co-operatives and Fisheries, which both fall within the same Ministry as the Department of Agriculture, will also be participating in the activity.

Participation is also expected from the Department’s Allied Agencies including CARDI, IICA and Mission Taiwan as well as the East Caribbean Group of Companies. Other Government Departments as well as business institutions and stakeholders in the Agriculture Industry will also participate.

According to Evelyn, apart from its educational dimension, the Open Day is promising to be highly entertaining with music to be provided by Recklife, as well as the Eclectic and Ultimate bands. The Bartenders Competition will once again be featured and for the first time, there will be a fashion show and domino competition.

The Open Day will run from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on both days with an official opening ceremony planned for 9:30 on Thursday.
