Several young children across St. Kitts were pleasantly surprised on Christmas Eve when members of the Rotaract Club of St. Kitts showed up at their home bearing gifts.
The members of the community service organisation partnered with the Department of Social Services to organise a Secret Santa project, wrapped over fifteen toys and delivered them to thirteen households just before Christmas Day.
According to an Executive of the Club, “the initiative was organised to help children in need to spread the spirit of goodwill during the holiday season. We approached the Social Services Unit in order to help us find and assist low income families to make the idea a reality. A list with the names of the parents, children, gender, ages, address and contact information was forwarded to us by a Community Development Officer and each member contributed twenty-five (EC$25.00) towards the purchase of an appropriate gift.”
He further also spoke of the outcome of the project and plans for 2015.
“The project was a success and we thank the Social Services Unit for their assistance. It was very heart-warming to see the many smiles and signs of appreciation from the parents and children who received gifts. Next year, the club will consider using the wish list method to allow the children to say which gifts he/she would like to receive.”
Rotaract is an international program for young men and women ages 18 to 30 who believe they can make a difference. It provides an opportunity for young adults to enhance the knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities and to promote better relations between all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service.
