SKNY – A new movement for young people takes root

By: SKNY, Press Release

As 2014 drew to a close, a group of likeminded young people saw the opportunity to bring a community together, but they did more than that – they started a movement.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Youth (SKNY) is a group devised by young people, for young people. Last year our Nation suffered from a terrible spate of crime and more often than not the finger was pointed at our youth. Needless to say, at times this was the case, but it takes positive action to reverse a negative trend.

The focus of SKNY is to educate their peers and develop stronger bonds in local communities. A small team of individuals started this by hosting a street football tournament in Central Basseterre during December. The event was a success and the team quickly grew in size, catching new members who share the same desire to make a difference in their communities.

Following a successful maiden event, members of the SKNY capitalised on I-Octane’s performance at the ONE Event and organised an informal talk for some young Kittitian musicians.

Young roots are settling quickly and an energetic movement is taking shape fresh for the New Year. Keen to continue last year’s momentum, SKNY already have plans in place for January and February. Look out for a mixture of: community sports tournaments; seminars for young people looking to further education, scholarships and overseas study; free online resources offering a new look at employability skills and an online events calendar.
