Labour Party believes in fairness!!

Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PRIME MINISTER and Leader of the ruling St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas said his Government believes in fairness and that was the reason for changing the boundaries in the twin-island Federation.

“We believe in fairness and justice! That’s why we went into the House on Friday, because the Constitution says as soon as it is possible once the Prime Minister has received the proclamation from the Governor-General it should be effected immediately. All I did was ensure I obeyed the dictates of our Constitution. And it a burn them...me don’t know what it a burn them for?”

Dr. Douglas was at the time speaking at a Labour Party Rally held in Lime Kiln on Sunday evening (Jan. 18) which had seen thousands in attendance.

He told the gathering that the emergency Parliamentary sitting held on Friday (Jan. 16) was not done in haste, but rather with fairness and in keeping with the Constitution.

“...Don’t let nobody fool you all about undue haste. What is undue haste? The Constitution says as quickly as you can. Well, it was possible on Friday and I and I the boss obeyed the Constitution for you because we want fairness and justice in the boundaries here in St. Kitts and Nevis. And that is why I am now telling you that we are ready. It would be unfair for us to have gone into the elections with these unfair boundaries. We believe in fair boundaries, we believe in fair vote, we don’t believe one man vote must be a half and another man vote is full. What nonsense is that? All votes must be equal! It is wrong for Dr. Drew to look after 8 000 people and Shawn down there a lime with only 2 000...it wrong, and that is what we have sought to do.”

The Prime Minister told his supporters, many of whom journeyed from sister isle Nevis, that the Constituency Boundaries Commission has been sitting since 2012, and reminded them that the Simmonds Administration took one day and one meeting to change the boundaries in 1984.

Addressing the contentious signing of the injunction, Dr. Douglas is adamant that the judge was fooled by the claimants.

“Let me tell you something, they are out there saying that the judge signed an injunction order, but I can tell you now, they fooled the judge. They did not tell the judge that the Governor-General had already signed the proclamation. They did not tell the judge that the Prime Minister, having had that done, made sure that it was properly gazetted and became law. They did not tell the judge that we dissolved the House long before she sat to sign the order for injunction.

“And you must say it tomorrow (Jan. 19), they misled Her Ladyship. Because I am certain that if Her Ladyship was aware that the proclamation was signed by the Governor-General, it was gazetted and made public and I dissolved the House somewhere around 6:30 or thereabout. When they went to the judge it was all the way like 8 o’clock in the night when the House done dissolved long time.”

The party Leader had sent a strong message to one of Opposition’s legal representatives whom he asserted wanted to fool the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“Tell Hamel-Smith me say he can’t fool nobody here in St. Kitts and Nevis. Tell him that I say he ain’t going be no con man to the people in St. Kitts and Nevis. Because that is what he is trying to do; con the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

In his own inimitable style, Dr. Douglas reiterated that the injunction order was signed after the constitutional process was completed and insinuated that members of the Opposition are not as astute as those of the Labour Party Administration.

“I say to you tonight and to this nation and to the rest of the world, when that injunction order was signed by Her Ladyship everything over long, long, long time. And that is why Marcella say we catch them with their pants down, but me say they had on no pants at all.
