Hon. Eugene Hamilton

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PARLIAMENTARY REPRESENTATIVE for Constituency Eight, Eugene Hamilton has denied claims that he tried to steal the Mace in the Parliament after he was ejected from an emergency sitting on Friday (Jan. 16).

Rumours were swirling in the media that Hamilton tried to stop the sitting by grabbing the Mace upon his exit from the Parliament.

Speaking on WINN FM’s Voices programme, Hamilton debunked the rumours and indicated that if he had wanted to take the Mace he could have gotten it.

“I did not make a move on the Mace. If I had made a move on the Mace I certainly would have got it, but it was not my intention to move on the Mace at all.

“I made a gesture to suggest to the audience that the meeting was out of order and should have been stopped, and one way of stopping it is by having the Mace removed. But I certainly did not make that move.”

Hamilton then went on to outline what he feels is the legacy of the Speaker, the Hon. Curtis Martin.

“I have been in Parliament only five years and I have been observing Parliament even before. But it is quite clear to me that this person who has been elected as the Speaker of our Parliament is as uninformed as could be, is as political as could be and is as partial as could be.

“I believe that in the history of our Parliament he will go down perhaps as the most ignorant of all. He does not even know how to speak to Members.”

On Friday, while Prime Minister the Rt. Hon Dr. Denzil Douglas was delivering the schedule for the new constituency boundaries, Hamilton was indicating to the Speaker, the Hon. that the parliamentary proceedings were in contradiction of the rules of the House and should not be taking place.

The Speaker however indicated that Hamilton failed to prove what was wrong about the proceedings and asked the Prime Minister to continue his presentation.

Hamilton however continued in his stance before the quite noticeable frustrated Speaker who called on a Government Parliamentarian to move a motion to have him removed.

The motion was moved by Dr. Douglas.
