Additional Items Added to Family Shopping List

By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 06, 2015 (SKNIS)   --  After much evaluation and efforts to improve economic activity within the Federation, the Government has added more items to the “Family Shopping List.”

The additional items include multivitamins/supplements (including multivitamins with minerals), conditioner, toothbrush and dental floss.

The Family Shopping List is a tax relief measure that removes Import Duty and Value Added Tax (VAT) from a range of items grouped under three headings: Balanced Diet, Health and Hygiene and Childcare and Education.

These measures are intended to alleviate some financial pressures for consumers therefore enhancing the quality of their lives even further. “Therefore, the Consumer Affairs is urging the business community to partner with the Government, the department and the general public to ensure consumers benefit from lower prices for food, hygienic products and medication,” stated Desiree Powell communications officer for the department.

“The Consumer Affairs Department will continue to monitor the prices of goods in the local market to ensure the value of consumers’ purchasing power,” she noted. “Closer attention will be paid to ensuring that the changes in policy, intended for the benefit of consumers are reflected in lower prices on the shelves of shops, supermarkets and pharmacies.”

Some items listed on the Family Shopping list include chicken (Fresh or Frozen), Margarine, Uncooked Pasta, Toothpaste, Toilet Paper, Children Diapers, Fruit and Vegetable Juices designated for infant use and Exercise Books. Medicines are not listed as they were previously designated as zero rated VAT items.

For more information on the Family Shopping List consumers are asked to contact the Consumer Affairs Department at 467-1550 or 467-1646.
