February 11th, 2015  -- The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS/EOM) in El Salvador, headed by former Bolivian Foreign Minister Gustavo Fernández, was deployed yesterday to the country to analyze the progress made in the organization of the legislative, municipal and Central American Parliament (PARLACEN) elections to be held on March 1.

During the second visit to the country in the context of this electoral process, the Chief of the OAS/EOM, who was appointed by Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, held meetings with members of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and candidates to San Salvador’s mayor’s office. Beginning today and until Election Day, a group of observers will travel across the country, meeting local electoral authorities and party representatives.

This Mission, that will begin its final deployment the week prior to the election, is made up of 50 specialists and observers from OAS member and observer states. The observation work will include an integral analysis of the key aspects of the election such as electoral organization and technology, campaign financing, gender, electoral security and conflict resolution.

Following the election, the Mission will present a verbal report to the Organization’s Permanent Council that will include observations and recommendations aimed at supporting the strengthening of the electoral system of the Central American country.
