DEMOCRACY UNDER SIEGE IN THE CARIBBEAN

Riot Police and protesters in Basseterre in 2013
By: Team Unity Secretariat, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 12th, 2015 - On Wednesday, February 11, 2015 the Opposition alliance Team Unity, held a press conference at its Secretariat on Fort Street, Basseterre to bring to light the very disturbing actions by the Federation’s Electoral Commission.

Leader of Team Unity, The Honorable Dr. Timothy Harris stated: "We have just received the list of voters per constituency on yesterday.  There are major flaws that could disenfranchise voters of St. Kitts and Nevis. The flaws in the list we believe are illegal, immoral and unethical."

The Honorable Timothy Harris also emphatically noted: "It does not surprise me that Dr. Douglas and his government are desperate, out of gas, and frankly scared about the outcome on Monday, February 16, 2015, which is Election Day. Instead of allowing the political process to run its course, Dr. Douglas would rather manipulate the voters’ list to his advantage.  We are simply asking to give every candidate and political party contesting the elections be provided with the correct list".

Free and fair elections are not just words: they should be the standard behind how we govern ourselves. The people of the Caribbean understand the importance of free and fair elections, and the price paid by so many to exercise their franchise without fear, favour or manipulation.

Dr. Harris continued by adding that the 2015 General Election has significant regional implications.

He noted: “The people of the Caribbean understand the importance of Democracy and Democratic principles.  The right to vote has been at the core of our democratic foundation.  It is the pillar of a free society.  I call upon the people of the Caribbean to understand that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.  The social and economic well-being of our nations depends on the stability of our nations. None can afford to have the perception that our governments are mini dictatorships instead of democracies."

Team Unity’s leadership and its supporters are well aware that good people cannot stand to see injustice and do nothing.  If this kind of injustice can happen here it can happen anywhere else in the Caribbean!

In St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Douglas has turned the electoral process into a mockery of democracy. Those who support this approach will eventually see they were on the wrong side of history.

Dr. Douglas' side of history stands for manipulation and exploitation introduced to us by our colonial ancestors.

Team UNITY’s historical identification will be that of building a legacy of freedom, justice and liberation from the forces of victimization and polarization.

Dr. Douglas and his administration have benefited from our ancestors who bled and died for the right to vote. The issue of the right to vote has been fought, not only on the beautiful shores of the Caribbean, but also in South Africa, South Carolina and Georgia. Gerrymandering is morally wrong and is consistent with this morally bankrupt and desperate government.

The Douglas administration is also aware that on Monday, February 16, 2015 the people of St. Kitts and Nevis would have determined whether Dr. Douglas and his administration deserve five more years, or if, as citizens of this beloved Country they deserve better and as such, would demand better.
