Labour/NRP train pulls up in Nevis; thousands attend meeting, concert

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP)/Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) train made a stop in Charlestown, Nevis last evening (Feb. 12) where thousands of supporters flocked to the area in a sea of red and green to hear from and support their candidates for the upcoming General Elections slated for Monday (Feb. 16).

The supporters began assembling sometime before 8:00 p.m. and, as the crowd increased and the meeting got underway sometime after 9:00 p.m., the candidates for the SKNLP and the NRP were summoned to the stage by the Master of Ceremonies, Carlisle Powell.

Each candidate walked a path created in the midst of the supporters who shouted and waved in support of them.

The NRP representative for Nevis 11, the Hon. Patrice Nisbett, told the cheering crowd that he is a “performance matters man” and challenged the electorate to judge his performance since he joined the Cabinet of the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas in 2010.

Highlighting some of his accomplishments, Nisbett said he gave the children of Nevis personal computers, looked after the workers of Nevis and worked to ensure that the interests of the people of Nevis were protected.

Constituency Number Eight representative for the SKNLP Dr. Terrence Drew, in making his presentation, said he was baffled over the history of St. Kitts and Nevis and wondered why two great Caribbean leaders, the Rt. Hon. Robert L. Bradshaw and the Rt. Hon Simeon Daniel, could not work together.

Drew however said that the godson of Bradshaw, PM Douglas, has come to Nevis to show that there is oneness. He also said the union is not just between the SKNLP and the NRP but St. Kitts and Nevis.

Robelto Hector, Nevis Nine’s representative for the NRP, declared that every time the country progressed it was under the NRP, and the greatest progress was achieved when it joined hands with the SKNLP five years ago.

He charged that the NRP’s political opponent, the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM), is offering a “quick way” to win the elections by promising that when they get a hold of the SIDF resource they would be better positioned to help the people of Nevis. He described that as an empty promise and nonsense.

The NRP’s Nevis 10 representative, Cory Tyson, told the crowd that the time has come for a new generation. He said he is looking forward to going to Basseterre and expressed confidence that it would be a reality.

Tyson said he is tired of the poor representation which Nevis 10 had endured over the past years and noted that the current representative, Premier the Hon. Vance Amory, has lost touch with the electorate and many of the young people.

The NRP, he said, would bring proper representation to that Constituency.

Deputy Prime Minister and Constituency Number One representative for the SKNLP, the Hon. Asim Martin, just as his colleagues, was well received by the audience and his message to them was that the SKNLP would be victorious, whether the boundaries are new or old.

Taking a stab at the CCM, he expressed that since it took office in Nevis, the only thing it has done for the people of that island is to victimise them.

Martin reiterated his colleagues’ sentiments that the SKNLP and the NRP constitute “a party of oneness” and it must be sustained.

“Victory ahead” was the proclamation of the Hon. Marcella Liburd, the SKNLP’s Constituency Number Two candidate.

She struck a comparison between the contributions to Nevis of Team Unity’s Leader the Hon. Dr. Harris and PM Douglas, indicating that the Prime Minister’s is more noteworthy.

She said at one point PM Douglas was rebuffed by the people of Nevis but that did not stop him from persevering, which is testament to the kind of leader he is.

NRP Leader Joseph Parry also addressed the large crowd, expressing that enough is enough and that it is time for the SKNLP/NRP to win. He entreated the electorate to vote against victimisation.

Parry said he did not want to hear anyone speaking anything negative about the SKNLP because Premier Amory, he suggested, had done worse to Nevis than anyone in the SKNLP did.

Taking the stage to chants of “we want de boss”, the SKNLP leader, Prime Minister Douglas, declared that “the boss is here”.

Informing that this is his first public appearance in Nevis in 20 years, PM Douglas asserted that come February 16, 2015 the SKNLP/NRP would have done a clean sweep at the polls with the SKNLP capturing all eight seats on St. Kitts and the NRP all three on Nevis.

The PM touched on some of the accomplishments of his Government and highlighted a list of plans that it would put in place if returned to office, among which are tourism, education and agriculture.

The event saw performance by King Konris, the SKNLP’s Constituency Number Three candidate, and Delly Ranks, while the evening ended with performances by popular Jamaican dancehall artiste Cecile and the Nu Vybz Band Int’l.
